Bayside Library’s Books 2 U: A Compact Solution for Community Access
Formed in 1994, the City of Bayside includes the southeast suburbs of Beaumaris, Black Rock, Brighton, Brighton East, part of Cheltenham, Hampton, Hampton East, part of Highett and Sandringham. Recognising the challenge of reaching diverse community groups, especially those in aged care and childcare, Bayside Library Service aimed to bring library services directly to them. With the added hurdle of navigating inner city traffic and parking limitations, a solution was needed to transform a small van into a space-efficient mobile library.
Our Tailored Solution
The versatile VW Caddy was identified as the ideal vehicle, and VQuip stepped in to provide customised solutions to optimise its storage capacity. Custom van drawers were designed to maximise space utilisation, ensuring the van could efficiently cater to the community’s needs. Beyond drawer storage, VQuip crafted customised van racking for the Caddy to hold essential accessories like folding tables, whiteboards, and other materials. The concept prioritised careful use of space and ergonomic design, guaranteeing a well-stocked and functional workspace for those working inside the van.
Efficiency in a Small Package
The compact VW Caddy, with its enhanced storage and carefully designed features, became a mobile library on wheels. This innovative solution allowed Bayside Library Service to overcome traffic and parking challenges, bringing the joy of reading directly to community groups.
Future - Focused Accessibility
The success of the Books 2 U initiative highlights the potential for compact, customised solutions. As Bayside Library Service continues to explore ways to enhance community access, this case study showcases the impact of thoughtful design and efficient use of space in reaching diverse audiences.
