2025 HiAce: Versatile and Built for Hard Yakka

Feb 3, 2025

A barn door version of the latest Toyota HiAce adds even more versatility to this best-selling mid-sized van, which has long been extremely popular for trades and fleets for a wide range of applications.

In a recent review, CarExpert confirms that the HiAce is an excellent choice for a commercial work van, pointing out that there are loads of different variants and body configurations to suit individual needs.

Powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, most of the HiAce range is fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual also on offer.

With 6.2m3 of usable capacity and being 2m wide with a long wheelbase, the HiAce is available with a choice of either a single top-hinged tailgate or a pair of vertically split barn doors.

The barn door version (which returned in 2024 after nearly 20 years) is described as being “an added bonus”, and “the obvious choice” for ease of access if you utilise loading docks or for lifting in cargo with a forklift.

CarExpert adds that the barn door HiAce works especially well in its specific Panel Van variant, as you don’t have to worry about damaging the interior during commercial use. Plus, the reviewers found that when put to the test, the barn doors happily hold themselves open at 180 degrees. If you only need them open halfway, you just engage a manual strut on each door!

When it comes to safety and the driving experience, the HiAce also delivers…

Along with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, the HiAce has a range of standard safety equipment such as autonomous emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors and reversing camera.

On-road comfort is also perfectly covered! CarExpert says that “motoring along in the HiAce proves to be a comfortable experience, as the engine and transmission combination is buttery smooth for a commercial van.”

All HiAce models seat two occupants, except the Crew Van which seats five and the Commuter which seats 12.

In the final countdown, the HiAce’s suitability for a wide range of needs makes it an exceptional choice. It’s “built for a purpose, and it serves that purpose very well exactly the way it is.” The review sums it up as follows:

“The beauty of the HiAce lineup is its sheer scope of applications, as there’s almost always going to be an option that’ll suit you and your needs.”

“Combined with the very capable range-standard turbo-diesel engine, Toyota’s van staple will almost certainly have you covered in one way or another.
