7th generation VW Transporter all set for 2025 Aussie landing
Aug 7, 2024
In exciting news for businesses and tradies preparing to upgrade or invest in a brand-new mid-size van, the next-generation Volkswagen T7 Transporter has been unveiled in Europe, with the first ones expected to arrive on Australian shores in the first half of 2025.
According to a report by Drive, the seventh-generation Transporter is “an almost identical-twin to the Ford Transit Custom midsize van”. This is a result of a partnership between Volkswagen and Ford which has already seen Volkswagen base a number of its vehicles on well-known Ford models over the past few years.
When it comes to being versatile for a wide range of purposes, the Transporter T7 certainly looks set to deliver! Drive confirms the new version Transporter will be available with a short or long wheelbase and different roof heights, while body styles include a panel van with an optional second row of seats, people carriers, and a long-wheelbase-only double cab-chassis.
Full-electric versions of the new Transporter will be available with different battery sizes and rear-mounted motors.
Plus, in a further alignment with the Ford Transit Custom van, Drive reports that “it is likely Australian versions of the Transporter will mirror the Transit Custom with a 125kW/390Nm turbo-diesel, an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, or a rear-wheel drive electric model with a 160kW motor.”
In terms of wheelbase dimensions, the T7’s standard-wheelbase models are 5,050 millimetres long (+146mm) with 3,100mm between the front and rear axles (+97mm), while long-wheelbase versions add 400mm to its 5,450mm total length.
There are also various load compartment lengths and stowage volume options. The Drive article says that the load compartment length is 2,602mm for the SWB model (+61mm) while the LWB version has 3002mm – and stowage volume for the smallest SWB model is 5.8m3, rising to 9.0m3 for the LWB with the tallest roof.
