Revealed: The Most Popular Fleet Vehicles in Australia
Feb 4, 2025
While there may seem to be literally millions of different cars driving on Australian roads, if you’ve driven into your local council offices lately and seen a vehicle line-up (or recognised the logo of a certain plumbing company on more than one vehicle driving around the area) – chances are you’ll also notice that they’re the same type of vehicle or at least the same brand.
In Australia, while most new vehicles are purchased by private buyers, government and business fleets are another significant category of purchaser of light vehicles (500,000 to be precise)! This then raises the question as to what are these vehicles they are buying for their fleets?
The good news is that if you’d like to know more about the most popular current fleet vehicles, CarExpert has done the research and revealed some interesting facts and figures in a recent article. Let’s take a quick look…
Ford Ranger is top fleet pick
It probably won’t come as a surprise to learn that the Ford Ranger tops the list, with the Ranger consistently appearing in the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) monthly VFacts as one of the biggest selling vehicles overall — it was the second biggest seller in Australia in December 2024. In terms of fleet sales, CarExpert notes that the Ranger is a favourite fleet vehicle with tradies and office workers alike.
Next in the top three was the Toyota HiLux, scoring nearly double the fleet sales of the third-placed Toyota RAV4.
CarExpert reports that four of the top five fleet sellers for 2024 were utes. The Toyota HiAce was the only vehicle outside the ute and SUV segments to make the top 10 with 9411 fleet sales, accounting for 77.9% of all HiAce deliveries in 2024.

In its data CarExpert further notes that they excluded some vehicles from the data (e.g. the Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) as these are exclusively offered to fleets and can’t be purchased by private buyers.
